Dimapur, 28 March: A meeting was held at the Deputy Commissioner's (DC) office in Dimapur between the Government of Nagaland and Non-Naga representatives to discuss the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Dimapur, Niuland, and Chümoukedima. The government is working towards implementing ILP in these districts, which was the primary reason for the meeting.
Following the meeting, Basu Damani, in his media interaction, stated that the Marwari community has submitted a written statement to the DC, requesting that those who are permanent residents of Nagaland and have their names in the voter list be exempted from ILP.
He emphasized that Non-Naga residents of Nagaland are Indian citizens who have been living, working, and running businesses in the state. He pointed out that their names are included in the voter list, and they possess Aadhaar cards issued from Nagaland, as well as shop trade licenses from the state. Given these factors, he urged the state government to reconsider the implementation of ILP on such residents.
Damani further highlighted that many Non-Naga residents have lived in Nagaland for decades—some for as long as 45 years, from 1975 to 2025. He argued that suddenly imposing ILP on them is unreasonable. He suggested that those whose names are in the voter list and who hold Permanent Resident Certificates (PRC) should be exempted from ILP.
Additionally, he proposed that three representatives from each Non-Naga community should certify individuals who have been residing in Nagaland for many years, ensuring their recognition under the new regulations.
Damani concluded by stating that the community is now awaiting the government's response to their request.
