World Autism Awareness Day was commemorated on Wednesday, April 2 at AIDA Hall, Don Bosco School Campus, Riverbelt Colony in Dimapur. The event was organized by Blessed Bonding, an NGO dedicated to children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDDs), under the theme “Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
Moamenla Yaden, Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, Dimapur, Nagaland, attended the event as the special guest. In her address, Yaden emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting individuals with autism in society.
"The day serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding and celebrating the contributions of autistic individuals in communities worldwide. The purpose of this day is to create awareness about autism and also talk about the rights of people with autism," she stated.
Highlighting the need for stronger support systems, she added, "Although it is important to remember that many people with autism need much more support than others, each person has their own strengths and abilities. It is our duty as caregivers, parents, and educators to help them tap into it. More support systems should come up, and Blessed Bonding can be that example in society at large.”
Advocate Moatila Ao, panel lawyer at the Dimapur District Legal Services Authority (DDLSA), spoke on the "Rights of Children with Disabilities," focusing on the provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016. She elaborated on the legal rights and entitlements available to individuals with disabilities.
Mhiephronguno Khate, a clinical psychologist at the Dimapur District Hospital, delivered a session on "Understanding Autism," shedding light on the condition and the importance of early intervention and inclusive education.
The event highlighted the importance of advocacy, awareness, and community participation in ensuring the well-being and rights of autistic individuals. Blessed Bonding, through this initiative, aims to nurture inclusivity and support for children with IDDs in society.
