Students’ Body Finds Majority of Departments Unmanned During Working Hours

Longleng | June 27, 2025
A recent inspection carried out by the Phom Students’ Conference (PSC) has exposed a worrying trend of absenteeism across government offices in Longleng district, revealing that only a small fraction—just 4 percent—of the offices are functioning with full staff strength.

According to the PSC, many offices were found locked during official hours, while others operated with minimal or no presence of appointed staff. Several departments lacked even the officer-in-charge, with no public notification or explanation for their absence.

In a statement issued on Thursday, PSC criticized the prevailing situation as a serious administrative concern, saying the failure to maintain basic functioning is directly affecting public services and slowing development efforts in the district.

The students’ body described the condition not just as a lapse in attendance but a systemic issue that demands urgent correction. It has called on both the district administration and the state government to take corrective steps without delay.

Among the recommendations put forward are:
– regular inspection of government offices
– enforcement of attendance and accountability systems
– disciplinary action against repeated absenteeism

In the press release, Imkongchingba Phom, General Secretary of PSC (Convenor of the PSC Inspection Committee), also appealed to the heads of departments to maintain regular attendance, ensure transparency through proper record-keeping, and restore the timely delivery of public services. He reiterated PSC’s stance on upholding public interest, stating that if no visible action is taken in the coming days, the organization will consider democratic protest measures to demand accountability.

Following the PSC’s findings and statement, widespread public discussion has been sparked, with many local residents echoing the need for administrative reform in Longleng
