Dimapur: The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Tuesday strongly criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of promoting divisive politics, defamatory rhetoric, and undermining constitutional values ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
Addressing the media, NPCC leaders said Assam is the “beating heart and economic gateway of the Northeast,” and developments in the state have a direct impact across the region. They expressed concern that the Chief Minister’s recent remarks, particularly against Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi, including references to family members, were inappropriate and damaging to democratic discourse.
The NPCC alleged that slanderous and derogatory statements made during the election campaign reflect a disregard for constitutional norms and the spirit of fair political competition. “Nobody is above the Constitution of India.
The party further condemned what it termed as “excesses” aimed at curbing constitutional rights and expressed concern over what it described as increasing intolerance and the targeting of minority communities during the campaign period.
Reaffirming its support for the APCC under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi, the NPCC extended solidarity ahead of the Assembly elections and emphasized the need for unity, harmony, and youth-focused development in the Northeast. The party said it stands committed to upholding democratic values and preserving the diverse fabric of the region.
