The Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) on Wednesday raised several issues concerning Dimapur, including solid waste management, prepaid electricity meters and the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act.

The press conference was led by DUCCF president Zasivikho Zakiesato, with other members of the federation also taking part in the discussions.

On solid waste management, the DUCCF stressed the need for proper waste segregation and greater participation from all sections of society. The members said efforts must begin at the grassroots level, with waste segregation starting from individual homes.

The federation also called for all 23 councillors in Dimapur to be actively involved in solid waste management. It said councillors should take responsibility for their respective areas and cooperate with one another to improve the system.

The DUCCF said waste management in the city should be carried out in line with the guidelines of the National Green Tribunal. The members pointed out that Dimapur does not have a proper solid waste management facility, making segregation at the source even more important.

The issue of prepaid electricity meters was also discussed. The DUCCF said several meetings have been held with the Power Department on the matter.

The federation maintained that there should be freedom of choice for the common public regarding prepaid meters. While it said prepaid meters could be made mandatory for government offices and commercial properties, it felt that ordinary consumers should be allowed to decide whether they want to use them.

The DUCCF also raised concerns about the quality of materials and wires being used by the Power Department. Members alleged that poor-quality materials were affecting power supply and urged the department to use better-quality materials to improve the reliability of electricity services.

The NLTP Act and the demand for its removal were also taken up during the press conference. The DUCCF said a meeting would be held on the matter.

The federation further stated that it has submitted multiple recommendations to the state government regarding the Act. These recommendations were prepared after consultations with various civil society organisations (CSOs) in Dimapur.

The DUCCF said it would continue to engage with the government and concerned departments on issues affecting the people of Dimapur.
