The Press Information Bureau (PIB), Kohima, organised a media workshop-cum-VARTALAP on “Cyber Suraksha Bharat” and the legal perspective on defamation and journalistic responsibilities at Hotel Saramati, Dimapur, on Tuesday.

The workshop focused on cybercrime in Nagaland and the legal responsibilities of journalists while reporting matters of public interest.

Kihika Chishi, NPS, Officer-in-Charge of the Cyber Crime Police Station, PHQ, gave an overview of cybercrime in Nagaland, highlighting the prevailing situation and emerging concerns in the State.

Addressing the legal perspective on defamation and journalistic responsibilities, Temsunaro Jamir, Public Prosecutor, Dimapur, stressed the importance of accuracy and adherence to truth in journalism.

Jamir said that in a defamation matter, journalists should be able to establish that what they published was true and factual, was in the public interest and was not intended to mislead.

She added that where a publication expresses an opinion, it should be an honest opinion concerning public interest rather than one driven by individual interest.

Emphasising the importance of accuracy and truth in reporting, Jamir said sticking to the truth was the best defence for journalists in matters concerning defamation.

The workshop also included an interactive session between media persons and the resource persons.

Henlly Phom Odyuo, President of the Dimapur Press Club, was the Guest of Honour.

Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma, who was scheduled to attend as Chief Guest, could not attend the programme.
