The Dimapur District Congress Committee on Saturday held a protest march demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, as part of a nationwide agitation over alleged irregularities in the Election Commission of India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The march, titled "Protest March to Save Democracy," began at noon from Congress Bhavan and proceeded to Super Market in the Town Hall area. All party functionaries were present. Participants raised slogans including "Vote chor Gyanesh Kumar," and an effigy of the CEC was burnt during the protest.

Speaking to the press, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) Working President Apok Jamir alleged that the revision exercise had infringed on citizens' democratic rights.

"We know that more than 13 crore names have been struck out," he said. “That shows that there is an infringement on democratic rights of the people by and large. And it is a direct infringement to the Constitution.”

He described the alleged deletions as "the biggest extortion and theft which has been conducted in this country," and accused the CEC of taking away the right to vote and freedom of expression of thousands of people.

This all comes after an investigation by The Indian Express, which alleges vote theft and the deletion of about 13 crore voters.

The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has also demanded the CEC's resignation. Protests have been reported across the country, with the CJP leading large demonstrations in cities including Delhi and Mumbai.

The Dimapur march was among the demonstrations held as part of the nationwide protest.

Demands raised included the CEC's resignation, an end to alleged "vote chori," and protection of the Constitution.
