The Dimasa Students' Union (DSU) has strongly objected to the Nagaland Chief Minister's reported statement describing the Kachari people as migrants in Dimapur, calling the remark historically inaccurate, factually untenable and hurtful to the Kachari community.
In a press statement issued by its Central Committee, headquartered at Haflong, the Union said it viewed the statement as unfortunate and unacceptable because it disregards the historical identity and ancestral connection of the Kachari people with the region.
The DSU pointed out that the Kacharis have a longstanding indigenous association with Dimapur, which served as the capital of the erstwhile Dimasa Kachari Kingdom. This legacy, it said, is reflected in the historical and archaeological remains found in the region. The Union maintained that the Kacharis cannot be casually characterised as migrants in a place intrinsically linked to their ancestral heritage.
While respecting all communities residing in present-day Dimapur, the DSU asserted that peaceful coexistence must not come at the expense of recognising the indigenous identity and historical legacy of the Kachari people. It said the facts and contributions of every community should be acknowledged fairly, without selectively questioning the identity and belonging of the Kacharis.
The Union urged the Chief Minister to clarify the reported remark and to exercise greater responsibility and sensitivity when speaking on matters concerning indigenous communities. It said the historical identity, ancestral connection and dignity of the Dimasa Kachari people deserve recognition and respect.
The DSU added that it would continue to uphold and safeguard these principles through peaceful and democratic means.
