Madras High Court has imposed a fine of ten lakh rupees against Patanjali Ayurved and the Divya Mandir Yog Trust for the unauthentic claim that its Ayurvedic formulation Coronil could cure Covid-19.

A private firm in Chennai filed a case saying it is manufacturing industrial cleaning materials under the name Coronil for long. It said Patanjali is infringing on its registered trademark by launching its products under the same name. The court issued an injunction against using the name by Patanjali.

However, Patanjali filed a petition seeking to remove the injunction. The court in its verdict today confirmed the stay. It also observed that Patanjali has made a false claim that its product can cure Covid-19. It said the plaintiffs have tried to use the pandemic situation to get unduly profited though they did not have the proof of curing the disease and imposed the fine of ten lakh rupees.
